ELT Polite Requests Restaurant Game

*Polite Request* is a gamified ESL game that helps students practise polite requests in a restaurant setting. In the game, your aim is to order food politely. If you speak to the waiter using polite expressions, you can successfully complete your order. However, if you speak to the waiter rudely, your choices will have consequences.

Polite Requests Game

I created this game to turn a simple language topic into an experience. Students often learn expressions such as “Could I have…?” and “Can I…?” through repetition, but they may not understand how their choice of language affects real communication. I wanted to gamify this learning by giving students choices and showing the consequences of those choices immediately. In the game, the player sits in a restaurant and speaks with a waiter. When the player uses polite language, the waiter responds positively and the order is completed successfully. However, if the player continues speaking rudely, the waiter becomes angry, asks them to speak more politely, and eventually asks them to leave.
